The "Hate is No Game: Hate and Harassment in Online Games 2023" report by the ADL Center for Technology and Society highlights the pervasive issue of hate and harassment in online gaming, affecting an estimated 83 million out of 110 million players in the U.S., with three out of four young people experiencing harassment.
It shows an increase in harassment based on identity, particularly among women and Black or African American gamers, while overall harassment rates have slightly decreased for the first time in five years. The report notes a decrease in exposure to white supremacist ideologies among gamers but emphasises that those exposed to such content encounter it regularly. It calls for urgent action from all stakeholders, including industry, government, civil society, and the public, to address the growing and spreading issue of hate and harassment in online multiplayer games, suggesting the negative impact on player spending and the gaming environment..
